Women’s participation sought in ICT
Kathmandu, April 28
Minister for Information and Communications, Sherdhan Rai, today stressed on the need for women’s empowerment in information and technology field. At a programme held to mark International Girls in ICT Day here, Minister Rai said women needed to be empowered so that their talents and skills could be used properly.
He added that the government was organizing various trainings to empower the women in the information and technology sector. In the programme held by Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTC) with support from Information Technology Society Nepal, the Information Minister spoke of the government plan to set up internet services in community schools of the rural parts of the country to familiarize the girls in information and technology.
On the occasion, teams of girls were awarded cash prizes and certificates. The girls’ teams competed in developing a mobile application which can be used by women to protect themselves from external and domestic violence.
NTC Executive Chairman, Digambar Jha, and NTC Programme Director, Purushottam Khanal, Information Technology Society Nepal Chair, Damodar Poudel, among others shed light on the efforts being made to seek women’s participation in information and communication technology. The Day is being marked on the fourth Thursday of the month of April since 2013.
